This wonderful antique 19th century French violin is offered to the highest bidder with no reserve.
The violin is a faithful reproduction of a violin by Gaspard Duisso made in 1529 and is labeled appropriately.
This is a very attractive violin with double inlaid purfling as well as inlaid decoration on the bottom of the back and hand painted decoration near the top. The appearance has the striking warmth of a true antique violin.
The violin is in very good condition with some very minor and well done repairs. There are no cracks or damages anywhere near the soundpost area. The violin was just set up by a professional luthier. It has a good, well-carved and well-fitted bridge, new soundpost, fresh Thomastik Dominant strings, and well-fitting, Parisian eye ebony pegs that turn easily and hold well. The fittings are matching ebony with Parisian eyes and are well matched to the instrument. The string heights, bridge height, projection, angle, after-length, etc have all been checked and properly adjusted. This violin is ready for immediate play.
There have been crack repairs around both f holes-one running to the lower purfling. The varnish is gorgeous and original showing a wonderful clean patina from age. There have been no damages or repairs in the area of the soundpost and no cracks or repairs to the back. Likewise the ribs are all perfect and pegbox has been fully bushed. The violin is well-made with full linings and four large contoured corner blocks.
This is a well-played violin with a loud, mature and smooth tone. This violin can blow out the doors of a good sized hall, and is delightful to play - bright and penetrating but sweet and smooth. Every note and tone is clear and brilliant but with a smooth solid core. It is a delightful instrument to play as the feedback under the ear is very satisfying. Overtones seem to build and come like waves, undulating and rolling with light bell-like chimes. This is a very powerful and responsive instrument with both good dynamic range and an accessible blend of colors. It can be soft and sweet with a remarkable ability to be light and smooth under the ear but much louder at a distance. The tone is even and strong but without being strident or shrill. It has the a truely centered tone, and the power and focus to penetrate when needed. This will be a delight for a serious and accomplished player.
The back measures 14 1/4 inches or 362 mm. This is a large, full-sized violin.
