Here is a very uncommon find...........
The only real reason I labeled this as a "project" is due to the facts that the logo and serial have been removed. Read on for the story behind it, and from what I can see and hear with this guitar, I have reason to doubt that is the way it happened.
I obtained this guitar from a man who claimed he had a close family member, (recently deceased), that was an employee at the Martin Pa. factory for several years. (I am located relatively close to Nazareth, Pa.)
This particular guitar is a ca. mid 1980's Martin Model HD-28, that according to the tale, was designated by the factory to go to the trash due to excessive lacquer checking during it's final finishing process. Apparently, the previous (employee) owner was permitted to salvage it, after agreeing to remove the headstock logo, the serial numbers, and the Martin ink stamp inside the sound-hole. (The "Use light or med. strings stamp still remains). If you look closely inside, you can see where the serial number and CF Martin ink stamp were sanded from the interior. You can see obviously where the headstock logo was removed. (Just as a note...the Martin guitar kits they marketed during that period never bore any inked stamps that would have been applied at the factory).
It has a factory truss rod, which dates this to the early-mid 80's.
Cosmetically, this guitar displays much finish checking. There is a repaired top crack below the bridge to the end of the body. It is tight now, and of no concern. The original frets displays some wear, but overall still a strong 75% left to them. The guitar has a factory truss rod, and the neck is very straight, with a good angle. No issues. The action is very nice, and this guitar is as loud and thunderous as a cannon. The original nut is getting a tad low in some places, but this can be corrected down the road rather easily if you decide to do so.
It has a solid Spruce top, Rosewood back and sides, and the "snowflake" inlays on the fingerboard. CF Martin tuning gears. The guitar appears all stock, with exception of it's logos and serial number. There was an after-market piezo saddle pickup added at one point, and the output jack is where the lower strap button should be. There is an added strap button on the neck heel. (see pics).
Basically, if you can live with a very relic looking HD-28 cosmetically, you will have one great playing and sounding Martin here. As I mentioned, the ONLY reason, I put the term "project" in the title is for the cosmetic and logo reasons. This baby is ready to play out just as she sits. It looks, plays, and sounds like a much older Martin. I have no idea where you could obtain a replacement Martin logo, but if you can, you can give it a much more finished look.
Take a look at the many detailed pics, and feel free to click on any of them for a close-up view. There is much finish checking, and some nicks and tiny player dings. It was well used, but not abused. The winning bidder will also get a FREE newer hardshell case that should protect it well. (Not entirely pictured but included).
