In 1933 Tom Mix, the great western movie star, began endorsing Ralston 100% Wheat Cereal through the Tom Mix Straight Shooters Cloub and the world famous radio series he had. Millions of listeners faithfully tuned in to live the adventures of Tom Mix. Children used the secret handshake and password and saved box tops and quarters to by a secret decoder ring, good luck charm, invisible ink pens and other items. This group entertained on that radio show from 1933 to 1940 when Tom Mix was killed in an Arizona auto wreck.

Wakely was a huge hitmaker for Capitol and a singing cowboy for Monogram pictures with sidekicks Lee "Lasses" White and Dennis Moore in the movies. Dub Taylor also appeared with Jimmy in RIDIN' DOWN THE TRAIL. Jimmy made 16 westerns but had stopped by the time he began doing duets with Richard A. Whiting, the composer's daughter, Margaret. They are best known for popularizing the monster Christmas hit SILVER BELLS. Jimmy Wakely comic books survived until 1952!

6- IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE NOW 1941 - Jimmie Davis, Floyd Tillman. Cover photo of WILF CARTER (MONTANA SLIM). Wilf was a Canadian country singer, songwriter, guitarist and yodeller. He was Canada's first country music star. In 1940 he injured his back in a car accident in Montana and couldn't perform much but his recordings and sheet music kept him going for another decade! In 1949 he sold his ranch and took a 180 acre farm in New Jersey, then in 1952 lost a lot of his money in the ill fated Orlando, Florida Wilf Carter Motor Lodge.

7- YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE 1941 - Jimmie Davis, Charles Mitchell. Cover JIMMIE DAVIS. James Houston Davis (1899-2000) sang sacred and pop songs and served two terms as Democratic governor of Louisiana 1944-1948 and 1960-1964. He modeled his country music style on Jimmie Rodgers and did RED NIGHTGOWN BLUES with slide guitar accompaniment by black bluesman Oscar Woods. In 1977 this tune became the official song of Louisiana. He claimed to have written this tune at LSU but in fact he bought it from Paul Rice who had recorded it with his brother Hoke as The Rice Brothers. They had needed the cash and he took credit for the tune he didn't write!

8- RED RIVER VALLEY 1935- Cover PRAIRIE RAMBLERS with Floyd Holmes on WLS, Chicago. Floyd "Salty" Holmes was from Glasgow, Kentucky and was a harmonica virtuoso of the talking harp style imitating the human voice like Sonny Terry did when he played. He also played jug and guitar and formed The Kentucky Ramblers in 1930 and in 1933 they became the Prairie Ramblers on WLS with their new vocalist PATSY MONTANA. They backed her hit I WANT TO BE A COWBOY'S SWEETHEART.  They were Jack Taylor, Chick Hurt, Alan Crocket, and later Tex Atchison. They made 100+ recordings 1933 to 1940. Holmes was friends with Gene Autry who asked him to star in westerns 1936-1944 including ARIZONA DAYS and SADDLE LEATHER LAW. Holmes could play two harmonicas simultaneously with his mouth and nose!! He appeared with his wife Jean Chapel on the Grand Ole Opry 1947 to 1956 when they divorced.

This big hit created the honky tonk style of music and in 1948 he had a hit with BLUE CHRISTMAS, later big with Elvis Presley. WALTZ ACROSS TEXAS was another big hit and in the early 1960s he did duets with newcomer LORETTA LYNN such as Sweet Thang.

12- GOSPEL BOOGIE 1947 - Lee Roy Abernathy. Cover THE OAKRIDGE QUARTET, now known as THE OAKRIDGE BOYS. This group began in 1945 and changed their name in the early sixties. They were not yet well known when this sheet music was published as their fame came in the fifties and after. This picture shows the original group! They first were together in 1943 as The Georgia Clodhoppers with Wally Fowler, Lou "Deacon" Freeman, Curly Kinsey and Johnny New. FAIR CONDITION due to a vertical fold.

20- BIG ROCK CANDY MOUNTAIN 1935 - Cover SMILEY BURNETTE OVER WLS CHICAGO. Lester Alvin (Smiley) Burnette (March 18, 1911 – February 16, 1967), an American singer-songwriter who could play as many as 100 different musical instruments, was a successful comedy actor in Western films over three decades.Burnette was born in Summum, Illinois. He began singing in childhood and learned to play a variety of instruments while still a boy. In his teens, he worked in vaudeville and at a local radio station. His break came when he was hired to perform on the National Barn Dance on Chicago's WLS radio station where Gene Autry was the show's major star.At a time when Hollywood was searching for talent for Western films, Burnette and Autry got their first small role in the 1934 Ken Maynard Republic Pictures film, In Old Santa Fe. Burnette appeared in several bit parts until the following year's release of the Rin Tin Tin hit film, The Adventures of Rex and Rinty in which he had a secondary but more prominent role. By then, Autry was already being cast in a lead role and the rotund Burnette would team up with him as a lovable comedy sidekick named Frog Millhouse (or plain Frog and sometimes as Smiley). Their association would produce more than 60 feature-length musical Westerns. The popularity of Burnette's Frog Millhouse character, with his trademark floppy black hat, was such that when Autry left for World War II service he did sidekicks duties with Eddie Dew, Sunset Carson and Bob Livingston, plus nine other films with Roy Rogers. After leaving Republic Pictures in 1944, Burnette became the sidekick to Charles Starrett at Columbia Pictures in the long Durango Kid series. Starrett starred in the series from 1944 until 1952, and that pairing resulted in more than 50 films. After the Starrett series was over, Burnette joined Autry for his final six films, all released by Columbia Pictures in 1953.

21- BIG ROCK CANDY MOUNTAIN 1935 - Cover photo CLIFF CARLISLE. Cliff's  most obvious distinction from Jimmie Rodgers was that he apparently chose to accompany himself exclusively on lap steel guitar, usually a custom-built National, in a style which was mature by the time he came to record, in 1930.  There has long been a tendency among blues enthusiasts to suppose that steel guitarists like Bill Weldon and Tampa Red had the 'Hawaiian' tag foisted on them by white (and therefore woefully ignorant) record company marketing men.  It is also assumed (and no doubt true in some cases) that white blues players took the slide technique from the black guitarists who influenced them.  Cliff Carlisle presents no such problem: he was modestly forthcoming and articulate about his career, and stated that he had been inspired by the Hawaiian musicians who were popular in his youth, and modelled his own playing on that of Sol Hoopi and Frank Ferera.  It is a matter of record that he presented himself as either 'Hawaiian' or 'Hillbilly' (or 'Cowboy'), depending on where, and to what sort of audience, he was performing. He was also known for his fabulous yodelling.

22- DON'T ROB ANOTHER MAN'S CASTLE 1949 - Another great Jenny Lou Carson and Eddy Arnold combination.

23- YOU TWO-TIMED ME ONCE TOO OFTEN 1945 - Jenny Lou Carson. Cover photo TEX RITTER. He was born Maurice Woodward Ritter in Murvaul, Texas. He grew up on his family's farm in Panola County and attended grade school in Carthage. He entered the University of Texas at Austin; he studied pre-law, majoring in government, political science and economics. One of the early pioneers of country music, Ritter soon became interested in show business. In 1928, he sang on KPRC Radio in Houston, a thirty-minute show featuring cowboy songs. In that same year, he moved to New York City and quickly landed a job in the men's chorus of the Broadway show The New Moon (1928).He appeared as "The Cowboy" in the Broadway production Green Grow the Lilacs (1930), which was the basis for the later musical Oklahoma!. He also played the part of Sagebrush Charlie in The Round Up (1932) and Mother Lode (1934).Ritter also worked on various radio programs. In 1932, he starred on the WOR Radio show The Lone Star Rangers, which was New York's first broadcast western. He sang songs and told tales of the Old West. Ritter wrote and starred in Cowboy Tom's Roundup on WINS Radio in New York in 1933. This daily children's cowboy radio program aired over three stations on the East Coast for three years. These shows marked the beginning of Ritter's popularity in radio, which paved the way for his upcoming singing career. He also performed on the radio show WHN Barndance and sang on NBC Radio. He appeared in several radio dramas, including CBS's Bobby Benson's Adventures and Death Valley Days.Ritter began recording for American Record Company (Columbia Records) in 1933. His first released recording was "Goodbye Ole Paint." He also recorded "Rye Whiskey" for that label. In 1935, he signed with Decca Records, where he recorded his first original recordings, "Sam Hall" and "Get Along Little Dogie."In 1936, he moved to Los Angeles, California. His motion picture debut was in Song Of The Gringo (1936) for Grand National Pictures. He starred in twelve movies for Grand National, "B" grade Westerns, which included Headin' For The Rio Grande (1936), and Trouble In Texas (1937) co-starring Rita Hayworth (then known as Rita Cansino). After starring in Utah Trail (1938), Ritter left the financially troubled Grand National. Between 1938 and 1945, he starred in around forty "singing cowboy" movies, mostly to critical scorn.

24- LOVESICK BLUES 1949 - Irving Mills, Cliff Friend. Cover HANK WILLIAMS ON MGM RECORDS. Hank Williams (September 17, 1923 – January 1, 1953) was an American singer-songwriter and musician who has also become an icon of country music, and was one of the most influential musicians and songwriters of the 20th century. A leading pioneer of the honky tonk style, he had numerous hit records, and his charismatic performances and succinct compositions increased his fame. His songbook is one of the backbones of country music, and several of his songs are pop standards as well. He has been covered in a range of pop, gospel, blues and rock styles. His premature death at the age of twenty-nine helped fuel his legend. His son (Randall) Hank Williams, Jr., nickname 'Bocephus', his daughter Jett Williams, and his grandchildren Hank Williams III, Holly Williams, and Hilary Williams are also professional singers.
