This is a nice old violin labeled as follows: Georg Cafla Hoppfas Violinmacher in Klingenthal, Anno 1731. There is also a repair label inside as follows: Repaired by Dearlove Leeds, Violinmaker to the Great Exhibition, London 1851. The violin measures 14 & 1/16th" and is full size.
The violin is in excellent condition. There is some worm damage by the endpin rib, it's repaired and solid. The purfling is inked. I believe this violin to be a composite. It is my opinion the top of the violin is 19th century English, probably made by Dearlove. And it is my opinion that the back, ribs and scroll are from the same German maker, Georg Cafla Hoppfas, and it is likely the violin is genuinely labeled and dated. The violin is all set to play with a new bridge and Dominant Strings. It has a warm sweet open tone with a good level of volumn. It is not an overpowering sound nor is there any hint of harshness. It is a charming seasoned tone with good projection and eveness.
