The handmade 5" bell is one
of the biggest yamaha makes, and boasts a thinner tapering
thickness for a very ‘open’ and comfortable
response. |

The special ‘French bead’
rim is flatter and wider than usual and helps create
the warm tonal colors of the legendary vintage horns
of the past. |

Yamaha’s attention to detail
is apparent in the carefully calculated gap between
bell stem and valve casing—the kind of detail
you can’t see but which makes a big difference
to artists like Bobby Shew. |

The main body features the same basic
specs which have made the Z so popular: the precise
leadpipe taper and super efficient step-bore design.
But yamaha has used some of the techniques that they learned
in developing the heavyweight Xeno trumpets to give
the Custom Z an unprecedented amount of tonal richness
and depth. The method of crafting the leadpipe,
the valve caps and buttons, and many of the braces,
water keys, and other parts are from the Xeno. And
all these contribute to the comfortable response
of the Custom Z. |
