1956 Olds Recording trumpet - professional vintage horn in original condition
This auction is for a 1956 F.E. Olds & Son 'Recording' model Bb trumpet. This trumpet was a mainstay as Olds' top-of-the-line trumpet for nearly 30 years. This horn is a highly sought after vintage in the early days of the Fullerton factory after the move from L.A. This Recording is in incredible condition - the best example I have ever seen of one of these horns!! The original lacquer finish is about 95%, absolutely no dents or dings on this horn as far as I can tell. Totally straight all over, no repairs or trauma ever, this horn is totally 100% original. Comes with the original shop card and Olds lifetime guarantee, showing the serial number of 203668.
The valves, as you can see in the photos, are in great condition and only slightly used. Compression is 100% on all three valves. Definitely no valve work will be required on this horn. This is like a 12 month old horn, since the original owner only used this horn for a short while and it has not been played until very recently. I have thoroughly cleaned the entire horn and everything works flawlessly - valves are lightning fast and really smooth, the 3rd valve slide moves easily and quickly for triggering and all the other slides move smoothly.
The lacquer has developed a dark patina on the bell and leadpipe, and the gorgeous tri-colour design of the nickel, gold brass and rose brass looks incredible. There is some minor lacquer wear around the base of the valves and two small scratches near the lyre holder on the 3rd valve slide. Mother of pearl on the valves and 1st and 2nd slides are 100% intact. The decadent hand engraving on the bell is really sharp and looks incredible close up.
The tone on this horn is absolutely to die for!!! Full, huge sound with many overtones that easily fills the entire room when playing loud or soft. It is really hard to describe just how amazing and unique the tone of this trumpet is. The best thing to say is that the tone is full of life and character that makes even the simplest melody sound beautiful. Intonation is spot on through the registers, (low D and C# need to be triggered as on all trumpets), and the ML bore is really open. You will not be disappointed with how this trumpet plays, sounds or looks. This is a very regretful sale of an outstanding example of one of the finest trumpets ever made.
Also included is the original mouthpiece, an Olds 24, a gold-plated Monette B6 mouthpiece, and a (non-original) case. I quite like the Olds mouthpiece, it's a little shallower than a Bach 3C and produces a great sound, however I'm including the Monette mouthpiece simply because I have found this mouthpiece works best with this horn, and the new owner may want to use this one. The Monette mouthpiece is in used condition, it has some surface scuff marks as you can see in the photo, however these are really minor and I couldn't even feel them when I ran my finger around the rim.
